Photos of Ireland

In February I took a 3 day trip to Ireland with three friends from la Fondation des Etats-Unis.

Hills in the Connemara National Park

After staying in Galway we stopped off at a spot along a long country road in the Connemara National Park.

It was nice to turn off the road and lie down in the refreshing Irish air.

If you look closely at the center of this photo you can see my three companions walking in a line towards me. Look for the red blur.

There were many stone walls like this all over the countryside, though the majority were intact. They seemed to be held together by nothing but their own grit, and who knows how long they had been there.

It is wonderous to think of all the work that must have gone into digging these stones out of the earth with bare hands and simple tools, and then moving them and arranging them into solid walls.

That's me, being dramatic on top of a country hillside..

We ran into some cows that just didn't want to get out of our way. Luckily the farmer saved us and shued them away.

The baby left a real question in our minds: if we approach, will the others charge?

More cows. Along with them there were many sheep just wandering about down the roads.

I don't know where exactly this cow was, though I think it was somewhere around our hostel outside of Galway, in Oughterard.

We didn't see much of the sea, just a little bit near Galway. The water was fresh and had a good, clean taste, like salt water should taste like.

The Sea

Ancient Stone House near the Sea

There was a stone carving on the side of this house: July 1776. And yes, I believe that was a grass roof.

Two of us ended up walking into Dublin and were happy to see this sign after about an hour along small streets and noisy highways.

Dublin City Centre

That long spire that seems to disappear into space is the Millenium Needle.

This is the archway under Christ's Church, which I believe was founded about 1000 years ago. The crypt was especially neat.

Trinity College, Dublin

The most famous (and highest achieving) college in Ireland, Trinity College. My friend Neil went here.
