Beets

Picked the first planting of beets today. They look to have grown well and they are between 1" and 3" in diameter. The other two rows are still growing, but one of them was shaded out by a gourd plant.

Speaking of shading out, the garden is starting to get somewhat out of control. The tomato plants are almost as high as the fence (~6'), and are growing into the pepper plants and the corn. They covered the gourd and cucumber plants a long time ago, but this was expected and these plants are both growing well outside the fence. In fact the gourds have climbed the fence and one now reaches 2' above it. They are also covering over the path between the fence and the pumpkin patch, as are the pumpkins. The corn are doing quite well, and are about 5-6 ft. tall. Peas started producing a few days ago, are not at their peak; in fact they seem to be growing somewhat poorly - I think the heat is too much for them as they look wilted quite often.

The pumpkin plants are doing very well, growing very quickly and I saw one there a few days ago that looked to be 5" in diameter, maybe 6" the long way. The corn outside is also doing very well; is probably 6-8 ft. tall.

In the side patch, where the old garden was, the sunflowers are growing strong, as are the winter squash. But the muskmelons look pretty poor - they are being outgrown by the squash and have pretty small leaves and shoots.

Black raspberry picking season pretty much just ended, but through out it was quite fruitful. Red raspberries on the other hand are still going strong, maybe stronger than a week ago, certainly than 3 weeks ago.

Apples are still growing, and the green apple tree is loaded.

This has been a very rainy season, certainly the most rain we've had in such a hot period in years, according to Jason.
